In a world where medicine evolves at the pace of technology, how can teaching materials be easily kept up to date with the latest advancements and remain relevant outside of the teaching environment? Moreover, how can collaboration in the improvement and transmission of medical knowledge be fostered between different stakeholders? This capacity has existed for more than a decade in a format almost everyone on the planet is very familiar with: the wiki.
Drawing inspiration from the famous online encyclopedia, medical students and professors at Université Laval have created Wikimedi.ca, a web based wiki that enables collaborative access, creation and edition of all the teaching materials used in the curriculum. It is a sustainable learning environment that is kept current with progress in medicine and teaching, but also becomes a tool that will remain useful in the student's later stages of medical education, and even once they start working as independent doctors.
Usage of a wiki within an academic context has demonstrated several benefits such as: better understanding of the subject matter, greater retention in long-term memory and increased exposure to up-to-date content. Moreover, collaboration on a wiki allows the development of high-level cognitive and metacognitive strategies among all stakeholders as well as improvement on core medical skills: erudition, collaboration and communication. The wiki being a versatile platform, other efficient learning techniques have been implemented such as flashcards and clinical cases. From a technological standpoint, it can be used from any interface, offers unbounded room for expansion and is built upon open-source software. Finally, Wikimedi.ca offers the potential to be opened to students from elsewhere, especially those from lesser developed countries and shows great potential in becoming a rich, modern and sustainable learning and teaching resource for the entire medical profession.

Dear Nathalie Chamberland

Thank you for submitting your abstract for AMEE 2017 in Helsinki (26-30 August). If you have submitted more than one abstract, you will receive a separate email relating to each one.

We are very sorry that it has not been possible to accept the following abstract:

Submission ID: 3199
Abstract Title: Wikimedica : a collaborative learning platform
Abstract Author(s): Jean-François Montreuil MD, Université Laval, Faculty of Medicine, Québec, Canada

Julie Thériault MD, Université Laval, Faculty of Medicine, Québec, Canada

Antoine Mercier-Linteau, Université Laval, Faculty of Medicine, Québec, Canada

Nathalie Chamberland, Université Laval, Faculty of Medicine, Québec, Canada

Abstract Presenter(s): Antoine Mercier-Linteau

Each year the number and quality of submissions increases, and selection proves ever more difficult. In some categories the acceptance rate was as low as 20% and many excellent submissions had to be rejected. Conference workshop and Fringe submissions were particularly competitive and we had more than twice as many highly recommended submissions than could be fitted into the programme. It has also not been possible in most cases to allocate more than one presentation to a participant.

We are confident that the high quality programme for AMEE 2017 will have something for everyone, and very much hope to see you in Helsinki. To register please go to https://www.eiseverywhere.com/ehome/201158 The early registration fee will apply until 19 May and AMEE members receive a significant discount.

The AMEE website https://amee.org/conferences/amee-2017 will be updated regularly with information about the Conference and the final programme will be available online by early July.

Once again, we are sorry it was not possible to accept the above abstract.

Kind regards

AMEE Secretariat
