L'échelle de Hounsfield, est une échelle quantitative pour décrire la radiodensité dans l'imagerie par TDM.
Définition
L'échelle de l'unité de Hounsfield (HU) est une transformation linéaire de la mesure originale du coefficient d'atténuation linéaire en une mesure dans laquelle la radiodensité de l'eau distillée à pression et température normale est définie comme zéro HU, tandis que la radiodensité de l'air à pression et température normale est définie comme -1000 HU.
Ainsi, un changement d'une unité de Hounsfield (HU) représente un changement de 0,1% du coefficient d'atténuation de l'eau puisque le coefficient d'atténuation de l'air est presque nul. C'est la définition des tomodensitomètres qui sont étalonnés par rapport à l'eau.
Les normes ci-dessus ont été choisies car ce sont des références universellement disponibles et adaptées à l'application clé pour laquelle la tomographie axiale calculée a été développée: l'imagerie de l'anatomie interne de créatures vivantes basée sur des structures aquatiques organisées et vivant principalement dans l'air

Une application pratique de ceci est dans l'évaluation des tumeurs, où, par exemple, une tumeur surrénalienne avec une radiodensité inférieure à 10 HU est plutôt adipeuse dans sa composition et presque certainement un bénigne adénome surrénalien.
